Seorang pemuda, kotor dan mabuk, pada suatu malam, muncul di KKR. Ia duduk dan segera tertidur. Beberapa orang diaken bertindak menyingkirkan dia dari ruang KKR itu, tetapi si penceramah meminta mereka untuk membiarkan orang muda ini. Malam berikutnya orang muda ini datang lagi, dan demikian seterusnya. Segera, ia mencoba untuk duduk selama kebaktian. Pada akhir KKR, orang muda ini tidak kelihatan. Tidak seorang pun tahu apa yang terjadi dengan dia. itu
Suatu hari si evangelis disalami oleh seorang pendeta muda yang berkata kepadanya, “Anda lupa padaku, tetapi saya pernah duduk di KKR di mana Anda berkhotbah. Anda tidak mengizinkan orang lain mengeluarkan saya. Sekian lama saya mulai mendengarkan apa yang Anda katakan. Setelah KKR itu saya berhenti mabuk, dan menyerahkan hati saya pada Allah. Saya pergi kuliah, dan saya jadi pendeta sekarang ini karena Anda. Syukur kepada Allah atas kesaksian Anda!”
Pdt ini adalah Barry Clayton Black yang lahir 1 November 1948, seorang pendeta ke-62 Senat Amerika Serikat. Dia mulai melayani sebagai pendeta Senat pada 27 Juni 2003, menjadi orang Afrika-Amerika pertama dan pendeta Gereja Masehi Advent Hari Ketujuh pertama yang memegang jabatan tersebut.
Dalam Markus 1:40-45 dikisahkan tentang belas kasihan Yesus terhadap seorang kusta. Istilah bahasa Inggris Leprosy (kusta) berasal dari kata Yunani lepra, yang digunakan dalam Perjanjian Baru. Namun kelihatan jelas, bahwa kata itu digunakan untuk berbagai jenis penyakit yang menyerang kulit. SDA Bible Dictionary, dalam membahas gambaran tentang kusta dalam Imamat 13, mencatat: “Suatu analisis tentang berbagai gejala … memperlihatkan bahwa istilah kusta ternyata digunakan dalam pengertian yang lebih umum daripada sekarang ini. Sebagian orang memberi kesan bahwa Imamat 13 meliputi 7 penyakit berbeda di bawah satu istilah ‘kusta. Sebagian dari gejala-gejala digambarkan menyerupai … prosiasis, … bukannya kusta, juga disebut penyakit Hansen, walaupun kusta pasti termasuk.” -hlm. 667.
Perjanjian Lama memberikan petunjuk yang tegas terhadap seseorang yang oleh imam didiagnosa menderita kusta. Mereka dihalau dari rumah dan masyarakat (Bil . 5:1.4; 12:9-15; 2 Raj. 15:5), dan dilarang memasuki kota mana pun ( 2 Raj. 7:3). Orang kusta harus mengenakan pakaian cabik-cabik, rambutnya dibiarkan terurai dan berseru “Najis, najis!” jika ada seseorang mendekatinya (Im. 13:45, 46). Jelas ketentuan ini masih berlaku pada zaman Yesus. Sepuluh orang kusta yang bertemu Yesus di luar sebuah desa berdiri agak jauh dan berteriak kepada Yesus (lihat Luk. 17:12). Meskipun demikian orang kusta dalam Markus 1:40 datang langsung kepada Yesus dan sambil berlutut memohon untuk ditahirkan.
Sebagai manusia, kita semua mempunyai suatu penyakit yang lebih hebat dari kusta, yaitu dosa. Walaupun demikian bagaimanakah Allah yang suci dan tidak berdosa itu menyambut dan memperlakukan kita?
Fakta bahwa Yesus tidak hanya mengizinkan si kusta itu mendekati Dia tetapi bahkan mengulurkan tangan-Nya dan menjamah dia, melanggar ketentuan yang berlaku saat itu. Apa yang ditunjukkan Yesus saat itu adalah perwujudan nyata kasih sayang Sang Juruselamat tersebut. Dia peduli, Dia penuh kasih saying dan Dia menjamah dan menyembuhkan seorang kusta itu.
Kita mungkin tidak mempunyai dan mujizat penyembuhan seperti yang Yesus lakukan, tetapi kita tidak boleh menganggap enteng kuasa penyembuhan dari jamahan. Disekitar kita banyak orang menderita, kecewa, putus asa dan tersesat, mereka membutuhkan “jamahan kasih”, apakah dengan tangan terulur atau dengan rangkulan atau dengan perbuatan nyata lainnya—bagi banyak orang yang berada di titik ini jauh lebih berarti “jamahan kasih” yang nyata dari pada kata-kata.
Hari ini, berikanlah kasih sayang, kemurahan, kebaikan dan kepedulian kita kepada orang lain. Dengan jalan ini kita sedang mempraktekkan apa yang Yesus Kristus telah teladankan.
